Walk into any opticians and the whole wall is black, tortoise or gunmetal, as though the only acceptable way to cover your eyes is apologetically. These are cut from the same acetate at the same thickness, in fourteen colours that nobody is going to mistake for a compromise.

It is the default because it is the safest thing to stock, not because it is the best thing to wear. The acetate is the same block, cut at the same 6mm, polished for the same week — the only difference is that the sheet went into the press coloured. There is no premium on it and there is no reason for it to be rare.
